Earned Value / Metrics

BCWS (Budgeted Cost of Work Scheduled)

BCWS, also called Planned Value (PV), is the budgeted cost of the work that was scheduled to be done by a given point in time -- one of the three base Earned Value Management measures.

Definition

BCWS answers "how much work, in budgeted dollars, was the plan expecting to have been done by now." It's derived entirely from the baseline schedule and budget, independent of what has actually happened on the project -- comparing it against BCWP (what was actually accomplished) produces the Schedule Variance and Schedule Performance Index, the cost-based measures of schedule performance.

Example

A project's baseline plan called for $500,000 of budgeted work to be complete by the current date -- that figure is the BCWS, regardless of how much work has actually been finished.
