Schedule Mechanics & Data

Retained Logic

Retained Logic is a Primavera P6 scheduling option under which the remaining work of an out-of-sequence activity still waits for its predecessors to finish.

Definition

When an activity has started before its predecessor finished, the scheduler needs a rule for when its remaining work can continue. With Retained Logic, the remaining duration is scheduled to follow the completion of the predecessor, so the original relationship is honored even though work has already started. This tends to produce later forecast dates than Progress Override for the same data, so the option chosen in a schedule's settings can change the forecast finish date and any delay analysis that depends on it.

Example

Rough-in has started while wall framing, its Finish-to-Start predecessor, is still 20% incomplete; under Retained Logic the remaining rough-in work is forecast to resume only after framing finishes.
